About this Event
Join us for an exclusive industry showcase event on December 5th, 2024, at Emily Carr University’s Integrated Motion Studio. This evening brings together emerging talent from our New Media + Sound Arts (NMSA) and Interaction Design (INTD) programs as students share projects exploring interactivity, creative technology, and speculative design.
Why Attend?
Sketching with Technology is a unique opportunity to connect with the next generation of designers and artists who are shaping the future of interactive media, design, and technology. This event is a chance to interact directly with emerging creative talent, strengthening the skills pipeline in creative tech and exploring new ideas and research in areas like interactive physical and digital experiences, sound, installation, and audio visual media.
Students are investigating key questions like:
- How might we use the dexterity of our hands, the ability to move through space, and the physicality of our voices to control and collaborate with increasingly intelligent machines?
- How can we use design methods to explore the future of technology products and services?
- How can we craft systems that prompt reflection on the evolving relationships between people and technology?
This showcase presents exploratory projects by 2nd-year Interaction Design and 3rd-year New Media + Sound Arts students. These projects represent initial explorations in technology, focusing on conceptual innovation and hands-on experimentation rather than finalized solutions.
Skills Our Students Have
ECU students are uniquely positioned to contribute to BC’s creative technology ecosystem in diverse roles across digital media, animation, and interactive design. Our graduates are poised for careers as Sound Designers, Media Artists, and Experience Designers, and contribute to animation projects that require immersive soundscapes, foley work, and audio for animated narratives. Our design approach is human-centered, where design researchers undertake an iterative process of user research, ideation, prototyping, and testing. ECU equips students with the skills to create engaging, human-centered digital products and experiences, with graduates often working as Interaction Designers, Product Designers, and Service Designers, making them valuable contributors to companies working at the intersection of digital and physical product development. Our students graduate to become versatile artists and designers, capable of working in diverse creative industries, from film production to game development and digital media.
This event is a key initiative under the Technology Pathways cohort of the Pathways for Creative Futures Program at the Shumka Centre for Creative Entrepreneurship. Technology Pathways is a collaboration with DigiBC and is funded in partnership with the Business + Higher Education Roundtable and with support from the Government of Canada.
