This one-day course provides instruction in traditional freehand field sketching and watercolor techniques in studio for quickly rendering classical architecture and sculpture. After a brief group meeting to get acquainted and discuss sketching composition fundamentals and tools, the first half of the course will be devoted to composing and generating field sketches in pencil or ink (two minimum). Participants will have exceptional architecture and art to choose from for the subject matter of their work, including the Art Institute and its gardens and the hemicycle in Wrigley Square.
After sketching in the field and a break for lunch, the group will reconvene in the penthouse studio of Daniel Burnham’s Railway Exchange Building at Michigan and Jackson. A demonstration of wash techniques will be presented, and to conclude the course, participants will then take rendering lessons learned and apply them in studio to making either a monochromatic wash or multi-color watercolor painting of their preferred sketch subject
