Closing remarks
Documentary film Last Call in the North, directed by Colorado filmmaker Stan Bush, will have its Skagway premiere at The Skagway School on Sunday, February 15th at 5pm. Filmed during the Covid-19 lockdown and then into the pandemic’s first two years, the documentary explores Skagway’s isolated wilderness utopia and tight-knit community of 1,000 citizens when its sole economic source - cruise ship tourism - is shut off for 30 months.
Stan Bush is a former resident of Skagway and will be at the screening for an in-person Q&A. The film is scored by Sub Pop Record’s indigenous musician group Ya Tseen. The Explore Skagway in the Skagway Visitor Department is sponsoring the event with concession proceeds going to Skagway School’s Class of 2028.
“What happened in Skagway could happen anywhere that relies on a single industry’s success. The community graciously opened their lives to us so we could show what really happens when an entire town is in peril,” said director Stan Bush. “My hope is that viewers will see their own towns and neighbors from the example of this film and think about what can be done to protect the place they love,” he added.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Stan Bush is a director and the founder of Go North Productions, a Denver-based production company. A former reporter at CBS News Colorado, Bush covered politics, business, science, the environment, and the criminal justice system. He won the Edward R. Murrow Award for Breaking News and two Emmy Awards for his reporting on the effect of climate change on wildlife habitats, and was a frequent contributor to The CBS Evening News and CBS This Morning.
Bush now produces and directs short films, feature films, documentaries, unscripted television, branded content, commercials, and news features. He is a graduate of Syracuse University and currently lives in Denver with his wife and three children.
SYNOPSIS
A town fights to survive being virtually cut off from the world for 2.5 years. While most communities reopen after covid lockdowns, Skagway, AK is stuck as cruise ships, the town’s only economy, do not sail and Canada locks its borders - trapping the town’s 1,000 locals and throwing their lives into chaos. After years of building the town as a northern paradise, families who’ve staked it all must decide if they’ll stay or go and what will be left behind - if there’s anything left at all.
