Workshop DescriptionIn this interactive workshop, participants will review several case scenarios that are based on judicial and administrative body decisions and real-life situations in the areas of duty to accommodate, discipline and discharge, and drug and alcohol testing. After introducing each case scenario, participants will have the opportunity to discuss in small groups the steps that could be taken to address the situation. Following a discussion in small groups, participants will have the opportunity to share their thoughts with the larger group. Finally, a labour and employment lawyer will guide attendees through the relevant considerations, legal risks, and best practices.
Learning Objectives
The purpose of the workshop is to provide participants with the tools to deal with issues related to the duty to accommodate, discipline and discharge, and drug and alcohol testing. Rather than learning through a lecture style format, participants will learn by applying human resources concepts to real-life scenarios, through discussions with their peers, and by seeing how Courts and other tribunals have ruled with respect to the applicable situations.
Participants can expect the case scenarios to deal with the following topics:
- Duty to accommodate
- Discipline and discharge
- Drug and alcohol testing:
Open Forum
The workshop will conclude with an open forum period where attendees will have the opportunity to discuss labour and employment law issues that arose during the seminar or in the course of their work. Participants are encouraged to ask any questions that they need answers to.
This session is presented in partnership with MLT Aikins LLP.
