The Young People’s Guild is looking forward to the Sixth Annual Black History Trail Blazers Sidewalk Parade that will take place on Saturday, February 15, 2025. Each year we ask companies such as yours for sponsorship to aid in continuing history in the community. There is a different parade route each year for African Americans who contributed to Portsmouth in a local, city, state, or national capacity. This year we will visit African Americans who are preserving our history in Home Museums. These museums are more essential now more than ever with Black History being torn from the pages of history. In some black communities there was always a family that preserved our history. This year we will visit some of these museums built on properties, in rooms and in homes designated to preserve historical moments.The Black History Trail Blazers parade will visit the Singletary Gallery of African Art, Portsmouth Colored Library Museum, Berkeley Museum, Ike Green Memorial Room and Robert Tucker Art Exhibit. We will then attend a drum workshop detailing the role of making, preserving and playing African Drums. We will have a tour guide at each location which is a wonderful way of educating the community about their local history. We will give a donation to each museum. There will be an opportunity to sample food and purchase wares in each location. There is a $40.00 fee for the tour and lunch.
We will begin the Black History Trail Blazers Sidewalk Parade at the Neighborhood Facility located at 900 Elm Ave, Portsmouth. There will be buses available for those that need assistance, boarding begins at 9:30 a.m. We will have a finale at the Elm Avenue Neighborhood Facility which will consist of The Black History Concert and Fashion Show at 2:30 p.m.
Parade Participants should dress and portray a local, city, state or national Black Person you admire. Please have the name of your person on your left shoulder. We will conclude the program with trophies for the Best Costume, Largest Group, Most Talented and Portraying the Best Narrative.
