10 acres of mono-culture fields that were previously used for sheep grazing are now planted with 3000 trees, ponds have been created and natural regeneration is being encouraged. The remaining 12 acres of Luckymoor are a mixture of woodland, 'Culm' wet meadow, and scrubby Willow wood.
Pete and Jane have tried to resist too much intervention over the past 3-4 years and by ‘letting the land go’ Nature is thriving! For a sneak preview check out the Luckymoor Rewilding Instagram.
Luckymoor sits within an area of approximately 250/300 acres of surrounding woodland, plantation, and farmland. Pete and Jane are keen to encourage neighbours to get on board with the rewilding efforts. So far fences have been removed between Luckymoor and 50 acres of neighbouring land and through liaison with local landowners a hunting 'no-go' area of approximately 150/200 hectares has been established. The site is close to the Roborough Rewilding project, also part of the Devon Rewilding Network. It’s hoped that in a few years over 100 acres might be rewilded!
The visit will consist of a guided walk around the site followed by some time to chat and ask questions over tea and cake. Please note that the walk will involve some uneven ground and slopes. Please bring suitable clothing (no shorts + long sleeves) and appropriate footwear (walking boots or wellies required).
Please no dogs as there will likely be deer fawns on the land.
Facilities:
There is parking available on-site adjacent to the house. Toilet facilities will be available at the start and end of the walk. Refreshments (tea and cake) will be provided.
Getting there:
Address: Luckymoor is located to the East of Luckaborough Glamping. The site entrance is off B3227 between Atherington and Torrington, marked by two black and white bollards, opposite Kelland Wood.
