Feminist self defence workshop presenting a toolkit of options in the face of misogyny, harassment and victim blaming culture
About this Event

Starting on Wednesday 17th November 7.15 pm for ten weeks.

This is the third run of a 10 week course of self defence that gives women and trans women a safe space to practice verbal and physical skills to build confidence in their abilities, assertiveness and awareness in the face of misogyny and gender based violence.

As the first two courses have developed and shown, this is now a growing community of women who support each other in the face of male aggression in friendship and solidarity.

It will be conducted by a female instructor with over twenty years of experience in martial arts, self defence and personal safety.

Each week the workshops will offer a physical element that incorporates a little fitness with simple techniques to help confidence in the face of aggression. We will also use our voice and our physical presence to empower ourselves in a supportive environment.

The workshops will tackle different elements of the female safety experience such as: street safety against harassment; why women do threat assessment better; the freeze, the faun, the flight, the flop and fight. We break down entitlement, misogyny, and toxic masculinity and explore the harmful effect on behaviours. Shifting away from the harm of a culture of victim blaming and placing responsibility firmly with the aggressor. Calling out why we talk about violence against women, and not male aggression. Identifying micro aggressions that undermine us and opening up our options in the face of them; and verbal skills and body language in the face of difficult and challenging situations. We are here to give ourselves permission to listen to our instincts, and use our observations of behaviours to identify potential for harassment, and also to report harassment to others and protect ourselves from self doubt and potential gaslighting.

Because of the in-depth nature of the course we will be restricting the size of the group to 12.

Please feel free to make contact as regards concessions, financial constraint should not be a barrier.

All ages and fitness levels accepted.
