Comprised of sisters Chauntee and Monique Ross, the duo creates a beautiful alchemy with their unique blend of classical training, soulful melodies, and contemporary sounds, as their 2023 Americana Music Association award for “Best Instrumentalist” attests.
Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the sisters grew up in a musical family exposed to diverse genres and instruments, despite the social imprinting that told them string instruments were the purview of white people. With Chauntee on the violin and Monique on cello, they embarked on a remarkable journey, fusing classical training with their deep-rooted love for R&B, hip-hop, and gospel. SistaStrings’ virtuoso talents found them sharing the stage with Brandi Carlile and Joni Mitchell and making a profound impact on the music scene. Now residents of Nashville, Chauntee and Monique are integral members of the musical community and among the most in-demand players in Music City.
In one performance, SistaStrings can cover a classical arrangement, create a mashup of beloved pop songs and spin genre-defying originals. That fluidity secured them spots in
Brandi Carlile’s touring band, as well as supporting Ed Sheeran, Maggie Rogers, Margo Price, Allison Russell, and Jason Isbell. They have performed with legends, including Joni Mitchell at
the 2024 Grammy Awards, Andrea Bocelli at the 2024 Oscars and with Elton John, Annie Lennox, Garth Brooks, and Charlie Puth at the 2024 Gershwin Honors and graced iconic venues, such as Madison Square Garden, The Kennedy Center, and Newport Folk Festival. SistaStrings’ highly anticipated debut record is in the works with collaborator Brandi Carlisle and Shooter Jennings taking the producing reins.
