About this Event
WHAT IS SIP & SHADE?
This isn't your typical "adult coloring book" event. Sip & Shade is a guided coloring experience created by artist Monia Kirksey that celebrates Black women through storytelling, creativity, and community. It's part self-care ritual, part creative outlet, part "tea-spilling" fun—without the drama.
Each Sip & Shade experience includes three core elements:
1. STORY (10-15 minutes) We open with a short, playful, slightly "shady" storyline that helps you arrive, soften, and ease into creative space. Think: storytelling with a little spice. This helps transition from the deeper emotional work we've been doing into something light and joyful.
2. SHADE: The Guided Coloring Challenge (60-75 minutes) The storyline/challenge combo you choose flows directly into a guided coloring challenge. Everyone will have a choice of page/shady storyline/coloring challenge combo, but YOUR interpretation is uniquely yours. This is focused, meditative, and connective—while leaving room for personal expression.
3. SIP: The Sensory Grounding Element (Throughout) The "sip" is what grounds you in your body and helps you settle into the moment. We'll have:
- For In-Person: Curated herbal teas + organic wines
- For Virtual: Bring your own favorite warm beverage or wine!
This sensory element is what makes coloring feel like a RITUAL, not just an activity.

👤 MEET YOUR FACILITATOR: MONIA KIRKSEY
Artist, Storyteller, Creator of Sip & Shade Coloring Books
Monia Kirksey is a true creative—a singer, writer, actor, photographer, and artist who has always used storytelling to connect, reflect, and make sense of the world. Like many of us, she found herself looking for a creative outlet to manage everyday stress. Coloring had always been something she could rely on. The only problem?
She didn't see herself in the coloring books available to her.
So she made some.
What started as a personal self-care routine soon became Sip & Shade Coloring Books. Sip & Shade features the beauty and diversity of Black women, paired with a lighthearted, slightly shady storyline, so you can sip and shade without the drama.
Because who doesn't like a little "tea"? 🍵
Monia is focused on expanding Sip & Shade into new and creative ways to relax, reset, and reconnect—all while continuing to center and celebrate Black women.
Come for the coloring. Stay for the tea.
