Lets go bike packing!! Have you ever done an overnighter with your bike? Perhaps you're a seasoned pro or maybe its been on the 'To do list' for while but you've never quite got there. well here is the perfect opportunity to get out there and give it a go. We are going to be riding a non technical loop on The Great Taste Tail, so pretty much any bike is good to go, just ride what ya got!
The plan is to start and finish in Nelson making each day approx. 85km's total HOWEVER feel free to hop in/out anywhere on the route that works for you. We will make a group chat and have planned rendezvous spots (where food/coffee/ice cream is readily available) along the way. For example hop on/off the party train in Richmond or Mapua. That way it will be easy to choose your own level of adventure and ride the K's you feel comfortable with.
We will be setting a cruisy pace, this trip is not about riding fast to get to the destination but having a great day out on bikes and enjoying the journey. We will make a map of the route that you will have access to via your phone, so there will be plenty of flexibility if anyone wants to hang out longer at a snack stop or go on ahead.
We have got permission from the awesome Fiona at Baton Valley Adventures who have very kindly offered us the Shearers Shack for kitchen/ toilet/ shower use, plus a covered communal space to eat together and even use of a BBQ. There are also four beds available, so if you don't fancy carrying camping gear then that is also an option!
So... camping is $35pp, if you would like to lock in a bed that will be $50pp. Payment will be made on arrival at Baton Valley, cash or eftpos.
Meeting point Saturday 23rd November:
River Kitchen Nelson 8am, departing 8.30am (coffee and faff ya know)
Then TBC from then on via group chat for whoever wants to hop in later.
Sunday 24th November:
Wake up and breakfast, aim to be departing Baton Valley adventures by 9am (ish) finishing back at River Kitchen Nelson whenever we're done! Or hop off earlier if you live on route or want to get picked up somewhere.
You will need to be self supported on the rides, carrying your own camp gear, appropriate clothes, dinner & breakfast, bike spares. There will be plenty of opportunity for snacks/ lunches/ water refills along the way.
I think that's all for now but fire through any questions you've got on the discussion section.
