The Fundamentals of Oil Painting class for adults. This class is structured to explore techniques, materials, and methodology.This class is structured to explore techniques, materials, and methodology needed to begin oil painting with little to no experience! All levels are welcome!
Course and single workshops include all oil paint, oil medium, a standard size canvas panel, scrap canvas paper, brushes, easel set-up, apron, clean up and 2 hours of instruction.
Please note that all classes must be reserved in advance and are subject to availability. Individual classes may be canceled due to insufficient enrollment 24 hours prior to the event.
Workshops include ALL materials used and 2 hours of instruction. Each workshop will include at least 30 minutes of step-by-step demonstration and at most 90 minutes of individual work with guidance from our instructor! Please know that you will be working on 1 personal project throughout the course due to the dry time of oil painting.
The full course is designed to build your personal project using the progression of each workshop to further advance your painting. It is important to commit to each session to ensure you are advancing your painting. However, we do accept single session enrollment. Please be aware that in single session enrollment the instructor will be keeping to the course schedule.
ALL Levels.
Week1 - Value Learn about the fundamental tools of oil painting and their proper use. Complete a monochromatic underpainting using the Grisaille technique to understand and capture values effectively.After the lesson, we will be building on the student’s personal project.
Week2 - Medium Get introduced to mediums used in oil painting. Add color to the week one painting using glazing techniques, and learning to handle transparent paint.After the lesson, we will be building on the student’s personal project.
Week3 - Colors Explore color mixing using a limited palette. Complete assignments without using colors directly from the tube to gain a deeper understanding of color theory and application. After the lesson, we will be building on the student’s personal project.
Week4 - Simplify Focus on simplifying the painting by omitting details and concentrating on large shapes, colors, and values. This approach helps maintain a strong foundation and overall balance, enabling quicker and more intentional painting. After the lesson, we will be building on the student’s personal project.
Week5 - Still Life Build on the skills learned to closely observe real objects and accurately capture their shapes, values, and colors.After the lesson, we will be building on the student’s personal project.
Week 6 - Personal Project At this stage, the students have acquired advanced knowledge and skills in oil painting. Complete the personal project, receiving comprehensive advice and critiques from the instructor.
