About the Poets:
Lorne Daniel grew up in Red Deer, on the border between Treaty 6 and Treaty 7 territories, where he taught communications, operated a successful consulting firm and was active in community planning. Lorne moved west to Victoria on the unceded traditional territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən people 15 years ago. He has written four books of poetry as well as freelance journalism, edited anthologies and literary journals, and volunteered with many literary organizations. His work has been published in dozens of anthologies, journals, newspapers and magazines in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. This month, Lorne is launching his new poetry collection from University of Calgary Press’s Brave and Brilliant Series, What is Broken Binds Us. To quote a review by Harold Rhenisch in The British Columbia Review, “Daniel is a fine craftsman, both of poetry and the broken (and then healed) heart. His poems are alive on the page. They are gifts.”
Bruce Hunter’s award-winning novel In the Bear’s House, his 12th book, was just rereleased in May by Frontenac House. In 2024, his novel Nella casa dell’orso (In the House of the Bear) was published in Italy by iQdB edizioni. In 2023, his poetry collection Galestro was published in Italy. Bruce’s poetry, fiction, reviews, interviews, and creative nonfiction have appeared in over 100 blogs, journals, and anthologies internationally. He is a proud new grandfather to Julian, Alice, Lucas, and wee Theo.
Clara A.B. Joseph is a Calgary poet and professor of English (adjunct in Religious Studies) at the University of Calgary. Her most recent collection, M/OTHER (Wipf & Stock, 2024), won First Place from the Catholic Media Association (Canada & USA). She is also the author of Dandelions for Bhabha (2018) and The Face of the Other: A Long Poem (2016). A former coordinator of UCalgary’s Creative Writing program, her poems explore memory, answerability to the Other, and the everyday holy.
Dr. Micheline Maylor was Calgary’s Poet Laureate from 2016-18. Her latest poetry collection, The Bad Wife (2021), won the BPAA Robert Kroetsch Award for best poetry in Alberta. La Cattiva Moglie is the Italian version of that book published by iQdB press in Florence. Her previous collection Little Wildheart (U of Alberta Press) was long listed for both the Pat Lowther and Raymond Souster awards. She recently won the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award for literary contributions to Alberta in 2022 and the Lois Hole Award for Editorial Excellence in Alberta 2019.
Sheri-D Wilson is a prolific author of 15 books of poetry. She’s authored 3 produced plays, created 4 short films, & produced 3 word & music CDs. Awards include: The Order of Canada, Honorary Doctor of Letters – Honoris Causa from Kwantlen University, Poet Laureate Emeritus, Stephan G. Stephansson Award for Poetry, & Women of Vision Award. Her lifework has centred around creating space for others to share their voices & developing a wider community vision. She splits her time between Calgary & Vancouver, with Willow. www.sheridwilson.com
