Christians have been writing and singing hymns ever since the Resurrection of our Lord. Yet few realize that the earliest Christian hymns were composed before Jesus began his public ministry—some even before his birth! In the first chapters of his Gospel, St. Luke records four hymns that capture the wonders of Jesus’ identity and work in strains of exquisite Hebrew poetry. These four canticles—the Magnificat, the Benedictus, the Gloria, and the Nunc Dimittis—have anchored the daily worship of the Church for centuries, and they speak every bit as powerfully to us today. In this four-week Advent study, Father Patrick will guide us through the texts and contexts of Luke’s canticles. Together, we will prepare ourselves for Christ-mas by exploring the historical background, literary structure, and theological richness of these ancient hymns, uncovering the ways they celebrate God’s action in the world through the coming of Christ.
