About this Event
This concert explores the impact of the Reformation through its hymns, tracing the outcome in today's society backward to the songs that wooed them in the first place. Divided by geographical territory, we begin in Germany, through the Nordic countries, then Scotland and the UK, and finally to the New World; roughly following its historical path.
The hymns to be sung include hymns by Luther and his fellow hymn writers (including hymn writing converts in the new lands) that maintain favour in their respective countries.
Concert length approx 75 mins
Katherine Whyte (soprano) really likes to sing. She's sung in super important opera houses, like the Met and ENO, but somehow finds time to bake extraordinary sourdough.
Arabella Heaton (mezzo-soprano) hails from Dorset. This Guildhall graduate has sung up and down England in opera, choral, and chamber music productions. We were delighted to have her join us on her single free day between other engagements.
Sung Chung (baritone) is good at lots of things. He makes and fixes anything from bicycles to bathrooms. But normally you'll find him on stage at the Canadian Opera Company.
Magnus Billström (bass-baritone) sings anything from Winterreise to Abba. He can sing really loud but it's still rather beautiful. He speaks many languages but, because he's Swedish, the word 'impossible' isn't in his vocabulary.
Suna Smith (piano) had the idea for this concert a few years ago, then she asked a bunch of great singers to sing with her. They said yes.
