Did you know that Fishwives loved to sing? Once known as a Nest of Songbirds, the village of Newhaven, outside Edinburgh, was famous for two choirs: the Fishwives and the Fisher Lassies of Newhaven. The Newhaven Fishwives were also healthy rivals with the singing Fishwives of Musselburgh.Have songs, will travel – from East Neuk to Newhaven, from Lerwick to Yarmouth Town the gangs of quines who gutted herring around Scotland and down the East Coast of Britain sang songs to entertain and sustain themselves as they worked.
Join singers and storytellers Marie Louise Cochrane and Jan Bee Brown for a fun session learning songs and hearing a tale or two of the hard-working women who were vital to fishing activity and the herring that nourished people around the Forth and beyond.
For adults & young people. Booking required - email [email protected]
