A one-off workshop to introduce a new choral work, Shannon's Song, written to mark the Bicentenary 2024 of the RNLI. The Shannon Class Lifeboats are the RNLI's latest all-weather lifeboat. The words of the song have been written by Leeds-based poet, Emma Storr, in collaboration with Ben Rhydding-based composer and choir leader, Keely Hodgson.
Keely would like to enlist as many keen singers as possible, who are music readers, or who learn well by listening to learning tracks, inviting them to familiarise themselves with their parts so that, on the morning of the workshop, they can "launch the song" and test her for sea-worthiness!
Singers can view the score and hear the piece in its version for SATB and piano on the ChoirCommunity website, where it is published: https://www.choircommunity.net/downloads/shannons-song-sheet-music/
To register for the workshop, please email [email protected], giving your full name and voice part. Keely will send an email in response, with a link to a pdf score of Shannon's Song and your learning track, as well as a track of the full song with piano accompaniment. Details of how to pay for the workshop will be included.
Deadline for registration: 2nd November.
If you are unable to attend the workshop but would like to support the work of the RNLI, donations can be made through this link: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/sing-to-save-lives-2024
One of the RNLI Vice Presidents for the Yorkshire Region, Clive Rand, will be attending the workshop to give a brief outline of its work.
About the composer: Keely studied music and composition with British composer, John Casken, at Durham University. In her younger days (!) she had professional performances of works for small ensemble, and ensemble and voice, working with soprano Patricia Rosario, Dame Evelyn Glennie (for BBC 2), Gemini, Sinfonia 21, and Okeanos. In recent years she has written for local amateur musicians, collaborating with poets, with two performances on Ilkley Literature Festival Fringe and a performance on BBC Radio's The Verb. She has worked as a Music Specialist in Primary and Special School settings and currently leads singing groups and a community choir in Ben Rhydding, as well as working as a composer and arranger for the ChoirCommunity website.
