The Soubrette Jazz Choir sings intricate vocal harmony arrangements of swing, jazz, blues, and other vernacular American styles. ‘Soubrette’ is a term from musical theater for the non-leading lady who is usually more worldly, more instrumental in the plot intrigue, and funnier than the lead. We sing mostly these kinds of songs, aiming for expressiveness, blend, and precision. The material we learn is both harmonically and rhythmically challenging and suited to singers with sight-reading skills and/or good ears. Demo recordings are available, and singers are encouraged to practice independently between rehearsals. The Soubrette Choir is open to anyone who identifies as a woman or non-binary and whose vocal range comfortably includes the G in the middle of the treble staff.
The September 9 rehearsal is open to anyone who might be interested to join–you can come sing and check it out and decide whether to audition and register afterwards.
Tuesday night rehearsals will continue into the first week of December and performances will be the afternoon of Dec 6 and the evening of Dec 7.
