Sing-Say-Move-Play: Musical Ways of Reaching and Teaching Children

As the American song-collector, Alan Lomax postulated in his “Folk Songs of North America” (1975), a folksong is actually “a continuum of performances---each varying in great or slight degree. Thus, it grows as it lives, acquiring fresh material or losing bits of the old and spawning variant forms, which continue to evolve”. If we agree with this position, we would want to find the folksongs, to teach them to children, and to reach them in ways that include their engagement in singing, saying, moving, and playing. Further, these folksongs might well offer them understandings of themselves and the histories and cultures of people close and far from them. This session will explore a small sampling of folksongs, learning known versions, even while also respecting the authenticity of children’s fresh-and-new expressions as part of the folk process of people making music their own. Because music is a dynamic process rather than a fixed product, traditional songs and instrumental pieces will change with every child's performance of it.
The session will feature children's folk and traditional songs from several selected cultures, and will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Huib Schippers.
