SPECTRA, created by multimedia artists Limbic Cinema and music producer K-lone, is a large-scale immersive sculpture that explores our relationship with light through the use of projection mapping, volumetric lighting and intricate sound design.
The physical sculpture is a modern take on monuments that brought people together in ancient civilisations to contemplate and celebrate the sun. From the stone circles of England to the ‘Benbens’ of Egypt, monolithic structures were built across the globe as a centre point for rituals to take place, where light would interact with the structure resulting in transcendent experiences for collective audiences. The common perception across all cultures was that light and darkness was extremely important to their daily lives.
While this may seem obvious, the healing potential of the sun and its importance to our health and well-being is now often overlooked. New scientists are revealing more and more intricacies about the way that light shapes our lives, and at the same time, our lifestyles are moving increasingly out of sync with the natural cycles of light and darkness.
SPECTRA is the third in a series of projects created by Limbic Cinema that explores how light shapes us, and how we shape light. Inspired by Linda Geddes book ‘Chasing The Sun’ and developed through conversations with leading historians, scientists, astrologists and ecologists across the UK.
It is a mirror project to Limbic Cinema’s interactive web experience ‘Let The Light In’ that explores the new science of circadian rhythms, released in March 2021.
The project has been made possible with the support of Arts Council England and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
Event Details
To attend the installation please go to The Station main reception (Silver St, Bristol BS1 2AG). You do not need to book ahead, if the venue is at full capacity you may have to queue for 15 minutes.
Covid-19 policy:
Limbic Cinema have specifically designed this installation with the safety and well being of our communities in mind. We are keen to bring people back indoors to experience arts and culture and we’re taking a carefully considered approach in order to make the experience accessible to as many people as possible.
The capacity in the space will be capped at 88, this will be recorded and monitored at the main reception when people arrive.
The installation itself contains no tactile elements, the floor space will be completely clear of objects, maximising the space, and making more room for people to remain at a distance which they feel comfortable with.
We would like to encourage people to wear a mask for further safety. And would strongly advise that audience members take a lateral flow test before attending any indoor events at this time.
Warning:
SPECTRA contains loud music, haze and flashing lights which some people may find disorienting. Strobe lighting will be used during this installation
