Initial and Advanced Trauma Healing Equipping sessions at SIM USA in Charlotte, NC
About this Event

The proven model of Trauma Healing uses applied Scripture and mental health principles to address spiritual and emotional wounds caused by the trauma of war, violence, natural disasters, and abuse. The book Healing the Wounds of Trauma: How the Church Can Help has been translated and taught in over 100 countries with more than 194 language groups in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas.

There will be two separate sessions taking place at this event. In the initial equipping session, participants learn basic biblical and mental health principles related to trauma care; explore if they are carrying any wounds of trauma or loss and bring those to Christ for healing; learn how to lead groups in a participatory way; learn the program model, and develop plans for using what they have learned in their community. Participants who have the necessary competencies are certified as apprentice facilitators at the end of the initial session. This session is intended for people who would like to explore becoming a trauma healing facilitator so that they can provide basic care for those wounded by trauma and loss, or (optionally) train others to do so. Mental health professionals can benefit from this practical approach that is effective with groups cross-culturally. This session is appropriate for caregivers who will work in the USA or internationally. The initial equipping session is followed by a 6-9 month practicum in which apprentice facilitators teach at least the core lessons at least two times.

The advanced equipping session hones the skills of those who have already attended an initial session and completed their practicum. By the end of this session, trainees should be better able to solve program issues arising in trauma healing as they carry out their ministries. They should understand the materials completely and be able to teach clearly and in a participatory way. Participants who have the necessary competencies are certified as healing group facilitators or training facilitators at the end of the advanced session.

Necessary qualifications:

Fluent in English

Able to attend each day of the training (certificates will only be granted to those who do so)

At least 18 years old

Committed to helping trauma survivors and able to dedicate ~2 weeks per year to trauma healing

Able to teach others, manage own wellbeing, work on a team, and learn to lead groups in a participatory way

Advanced participants: Must have attended initial equipping, led at least two healing groups, and submitted reports on their activities.
