This October, Immanuel Presbyterian Church invites you to an unforgettable cinematic experience. On Saturday, October 25 at 7:00 p.m., we will present the original 1925 silent film The Phantom of the Opera, complete with live, improvised organ accompaniment by Clay Whittington, Director of Music Ministries. This special screening marks the 100th anniversary of the film’s release, making it the perfect occasion to revisit one of the most influential works of early cinema.
Based on Gaston Leroux’s classic novel, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of Christine Daaé, a gifted young soprano at the Paris Opera House, who is secretly tutored by a mysterious masked figure living in the labyrinth beneath the theatre. As Christine’s fame grows, she finds herself torn between her love for her childhood sweetheart, Raoul, and the sinister power of the Phantom, whose obsession threatens everyone around him. Part romance, part suspense, and part gothic horror, this film has captivated audiences for a century with its haunting imagery and dramatic storytelling.
One of the most celebrated aspects of this film is the performance of Lon Chaney whose self-designed makeup for the Phantom shocked 1920s audiences and remains iconic today. The film’s elaborate sets, including the cavernous underground lake and the grand opera house, are breathtaking achievements of the silent film era. Watching this classic in a church setting—paired with live music—creates a unique opportunity to experience it as audiences did when it first premiered.
Admission to this event is free, though donations are welcome to support future community arts offerings at Immanuel. We encourage you to come early to secure a good seat, settle in, and allow yourself to be transported to the dark, mysterious world beneath the Paris Opera House. Whether you are a longtime fan of classic cinema or discovering this story for the first time, this 100th-anniversary celebration promises to be an unforgettable evening.
