The second annual Silent Movie Day was September 29, 2022, but here at the UCLA Film & Television Archive we’ll take any opportunity to support the preservation and exhibition of silent films! So it is with great pleasure that we present this special—if belated—screening in solidarity with theaters around the world celebrating the glorious days of silent movies!

Live musical accompaniment provided by Cliff Retallick.

Preservation funded by David Stenn

Mantrap

U.S., 1926

A pair of city slickers go on a camping trip near Mantrap, Canada, but soon find themselves out of their depth. The proprietor of a local trading post brings them to town, and sparks fly when they meet his flirtatious wife, played by Clara Bow. Screenwriters Adelaide Heilbron and Ethel Dohert transform Sinclair Lewis’ novel from a misogynistic tirade into a light-as-a-feather romp, setting the stage for Bow’s breakthrough performance. Variety noted almost ecstatically: “Clara Bow! And how! What a ‘mantrap’ she is!”

35mm, b&w, silent with musical accompaniment, 86 min. Director: Victor Fleming. Screenwriters: Adelaide Heilbron, Ethel Dohert. With: Clara Bow, Percy Marmont, Ernest Torrence.

Preserved by the UCLA Film & Television Archive in cooperation with Paramount Pictures.
