Join us at Galway City Library on Tuesday 26 November at 6:15pm when author Peter McGarry will give a talk entitled "Silence In The Western Skies - the 1958 Hugo de Groot "Galway Bay Crash"". The 14th August, 1958 loss of the KLM Super Constellation "Hugo de Groot", which claimed almost one hundred victims, is a tragedy which still resonates among Galway people.
At 3 a.m. in the morning of August 14th, 1958 an almost brand new KLM then state of the art airliner plunged to the sea just over 100 miles West of the Slyne Head lighthouse. The loss of this KLM airliner came quite incredibly only four years after Shannon's most notorious crash - the "Triton", yet another KLM Constellation.
Peter McGarry is the author of "Falling Stars" which is the complete history of Shannon air crashes 1946-1961. His book, the result of over a decade's research has been featured on national media and has sold thousands of units since its launch in early 2023. "Falling Stars" covers six major air disasters and has been updated to include The Hugo de Groot crash of 1958
Peter McGarry is now working on the follow on book "Rising Stars" with journalist Vincent Power. The book will explore aviation as it was in its glory days in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's.
