Kunstzaken UMCG heeft SIGN uitgenodigd om een presentatie samen te stellen voor Beelden van Buiten. SIGN heeft hiervoor de tentoonstelling SOFT CELLS samengesteld, met textiele installaties van de jonge kunstenaars Sanne Bax, Dagmar Stap en Jurjen Galema.Het kunstgenootschap Thomassen à Thuessink (tàt) is een samenwerkingsverband van Academie Minerva, Drents Museum, Fries Museum, Groninger Museum en het UMCG. Het organiseert tentoonstellingen, educatieve projecten en andere publieksactiviteiten waarin kunst, gezondheidszorg, wetenschap en de actualiteit elkaar raken. Beelden van Buiten exposities zijn een onderdeel van de activiteiten van het kunstgenootschap.

Speciaal voor deze plek hebben de kunstenaars Sanne Bax, Dagmar Stap, Jurjen Galema hun eigen textiele wereld gecreëerd. In deze kleurrijke, vriendelijke omgevingen kan je ontsnappen, bij wegdromen en over fantaseren. De persoonlijke behandeling van het materiaal, zoals borduren, ‘stenen’ en tuffen, is intensief en experimenteel wat maakt dat het werk aan intensiteit wint, rijker wordt en in zijn betekenis verandert. Het spel met zachte materialen zoals wol en stoffen, met kleuren, grootte maken de werken van Soft Cells aantrekkelijk. Of het nou een snoepverpakking, een korstmos of een beestje is: ze worden kostbaarder, verleidelijker en verlokken je toe te treden tot deze mini-paradijsjes.
De expositie SOFT CELLS met de kunstenaars Sanne Bax, Jurjen Galema, Dagmar Stap is te zien van 8 maart t/m 30 mei 2021 in De Poortweg in het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen, Hanzeplein 1.

Wol, mohair, alpaca en polyamide – 2021
Sanne Bax (Gorinchem, 1994) omschrijft zichzelf als hoogpolige schilder, zachte-sculpturen maker en performancekunstenaar. Ze doorvoelt de totstandkoming van haar werk in iedere vezel, van scheren tot spinnen, van verven tot tuffen. Deze bewerkingen en het arbeidsintensieve proces versterken de materiaalherinnering. Hier heeft ze een organisch uit de hand gelopen getuft ecosysteem gemaakt: een eigenzinnige hof van eden. Het is een landschappelijke overdaad aan materiaal, kleuren en structuren.

Borduurwerk op vilt, nep leer, vilt, pvc – 2018-2021
Dagmar Stap (Groningen, 1995) geeft door borduren en een textiele benadering dagelijkse voorwerpen uit de consumptiemaatschappij een duurzamere betekenis. Haar tijdrovende bewerking verandert waardeloze snoepverpakkingen in ‘kostbare kunst’. Er ontstaat een snoepwinkel, waar aantrekkelijke kleuren, vormen en materialen, klein en groot snoepgoed je verleiden en doen watertanden.

Tropical Worm Terrarium

Jurjen Galema (1992, Drachten) creëerde een veilig thuis voor z’n lieftallige Tropical Worms; een paradijselijk terrarium waar het goed toeven is. De kleurrijke sculpturen met menselijke trekken in een aantrekkelijke uitdossing richten zich niet alleen op de eigen leefomgeving maar ook naar buiten. Bedazzled Betty, Purple Pedro, Sleepy Suzie e.a. zoeken contact met de beschouwer. De kunstenaar wil met zijn ‘soft sculptures’ een brug slaan tussen de kunstwereld en de maatschappij met al zijn identiteiten.

The art society Thomassen à Thuessink (tàt) is a partnership of Minerva Academy, Drents Museum, Fries Museum, Groninger Museum and the UMCG. It organizes exhibitions, educational projects and other public activities in which art, healthcare, science and current events come together. Beelden van Buiten exhibitions are part of the activities of the art society.

The artists Sanne Bax, Dagmar Stap, Jurjen Galema have created their own textile world, made especially for this space in the UMCG. In these colorful, friendly environments you can escape, daydream and fantasize. The personal handling of the material, such as embroidery, "stoning" and tufting, is intensive and experimental, which makes the work gain in intensity, become richer and change its meaning. The play with soft materials such as wool and fabrics, with colors and size make the works of Soft Cells attractive. Whether it is a candy wrapper, a lichen or a tiny animal: they become more precious, more seductive and entice you to join these micro paradises.

Sanne Bax (Gorinchem, 1994) describes herself as a high pile painter, soft sculpture maker and performance artist. She feels the realization of her work in every fiber, from shaving to spinning, from dyeing to tufting. These operations and the labor-intensive process enhance material memory. Here she has created an organically out of control tufted ecosystem: a quirky court of oaths. It is a landscape abundant of materials, colors and structures.

Embroidery on felt, fake leather, felt, PVC - 2018-2021
Dagmar Stap (Groningen, 1995) gives everyday objects from the consumer society a more sustainable meaning through embroidery and a textile approach. Her time-consuming editing turns worthless candy wrappers into "precious art." A candy store is created, where attractive colors, shapes and materials, small and large candies seduce and make your mouth water.

Tropical Worm Terrarium

Jurjen Galema (1992, Drachten) created a safe home for his lovely Tropical Worms; a paradise terrarium where life is good. The colorful sculptures with human features in an attractive outfit do not only focus on their own living environment, but also on the outside. Bedazzled Betty, Purple Pedro, Sleepy Suzie and others seek contact with the viewer. With his "soft sculptures" the artist wants to bridge the gap between the art world and society with all its identities.
