The climate challenges we're currently facing give us a chance to make the world not just greener but maybe just better. Looking at how our situation doesn't have to be a sacrifice, it can be an upgrade, what is the Oklahoma Sierra Club is up to, and how anyone and everyone can be involved.
A nearly lifelong Oklahoman, KJ was born in the Ozarks Highlands, grew up at the junction of Cross Timbers and the Central Great Plains of central Oklahoma, and was transplanted to the
Central Irregular Plains of northeast Oklahoma. She has love for every ecoregion of Oklahoma, and she’s spent time in them all!
KJ studied Ethnobotany at the University of Oklahoma and spent a year studying abroad in Mexico, Ecuador, and Peru. Her career in public service before joining Sierra Club includes the
Oklahoma Food Cooperative, Oklahoma Policy Institute, and two terms as a Tulsa City Councilor. Through her career she has collaborated with a wide range of Oklahomans and is enthusiastic to continue that work in her new role.
“We are all descended from people who overcame huge challenges to bring us to this day,” KJ said. “Oklahomans are survivors and inventors, and we have huge potential for creatively addressing the challenges and opportunities of our altered climate and connecting to the natural world.”
KJ’s heart for this work is rooted in her love of nature and humanity and the hope in her daughter’s eyes. Together with the current members of the Sierra Club and all those who have yet to join our cause, KJ is excited to get to work building the future we hope for ourselves and the natural world around us. “I have traveled all over the state meeting and learning from my fellow Oklahomans, and I know this is a place of so much untapped potential,” KJ said. “All around us are Oklahomans doing amazing things and many more who would if given just a little more opportunity and connection
to our shared goals.”
