03:30 Meet at Virtu Ferries port terminal for check in and embarkation on Virtu Ferries catamaran MV St John Paul II
05:00 Departure to Pozzallo
07:00 Arrival in Pozzallo, disembarkation from catamaran and departure to Pozzallo
07:30 Arrival in Pozzallo historical centre. Free time for a coffee / Sicilian pastries at a local dolceria (not included in price) and to enjoy a stroll along the Corso, the main square and the historical Cabrera watchtower on the seafront
08:15 Departure to the South East area of Sicily, which is part of the reason why Sicily has been known as God’s Kitchen since Roman times and which is renowned for the production of cherry tomatoes, grapes and other vegetables. The area is one of Sicily’s important wine districts.
09:00 Arrival at an azienda agricola which specialises in the biological production of cherry tomatoes. Here we will tour the azienda where we will be able to see how they produce six types of cherry tomatoes. The azienda also produces sauces, jams, pates and other products. We will also be treated to a tasting of their various products, which are also available for sale to take home at advantageous and cheap farmer prices.
10:00 Departure to Marzamemi
10:15 Arrival in Marzamemi. On arrival we will visit one of the local wineries of this important wine region. After touring the premises, we will be treated to a wine tasting session (included in tour price). One can then opt to buy some wine to take home at fantastic winery prices.
11:00 A short 5-minute coach journey will take us closer to the historical centre. Marzamemi is a laid-back fishing village by day and also a vibrant meeting place. We will visit the historical centre of Marzamemi, where we will be able to savour the cute alleyways, the main square with the two churches of San Francesco di Paola, the “Tonnara”, the rustic houses – some old and derelict which were once used as homes by the fishing community of Marzamemi and others done up and converted into chic and trendy restaurants, pubs, open-air bars, art galleries and self-catering holiday houses – as also the view over the Gulf of Syracuse stretching to Capo Passero which is Sicily’s south-easternmost tip. We will also visit a traditional fisherman’s warehouse selling various types of local delicacies, including bottarga di tonno, wines, chocolate, dried tomatoes and much more. Free time in Marzamemi, where one can also consider having a dip in the blue Mediterranean.
12:45 Departure to the Hyblean mountains on a panoramic journey along a Mare-Monti road which connects the mountains with the coastal area.
14:00 Arrival at a typical Sicilian Agriturismo on the Hyblean mountains for a six course Sicilian home-made meal, consisting of various antipasti, two types of pasta, meat-based main course served with local vegetables, dessert, coffee and limoncello/grappa/liquer, including unlimited local wine and mineral water. After lunch we can visit the various animals which are raised on the agriturismo, including pigs, turkeys and chickens, or relax on the large terrace which enjoys splendid views over the lavish centuries-old olive groves in the area. One can also make use of the sunbeds and umbrellas within the green surroundings of the pool area.
16:15 Departure to a biological cow farm in the area
16:45 Arrival at a biological cow farm. Here we will come up close and personal with the various cows on the farm, including the younger ones and the pregnant ones. We will be able to talk to members of the Sicilian family, currently spanning four generations, who have owned and managed the farm for more than half a century and who live on the farm. We will also taste their wonderful cheese products, including the semi-aged and fresh caciocavallo, and have the opportunity to buy some of the products at advantageous and cheap farm prices.
17:30 Departure to a sweet, chocolate and ice-cream factory and dolceria
17:45 Arrival at the sweet and chocolate factory and dolceria. Here we will be able to buy various types of sweet delicacies to take home, including pasta alla mandorla (almond pastries), pasta al pistacchio (pistacchio pastries), ‘mpanadigghi (exquisite Modica sweet pastries which contain 60% beef) and more, which are produced here every day.
18:30 Departure to Pozzallo
19:15 Arrival in Pozzallo port, check in and embarkation on the catamaran.
20:30 Departure to Malta
22:30 Arrival in Malta
