Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, has a rich and unique story to tell, a heritage that blends the cultures of the seafaring Phoenicians and colonizing Greeks with those of the Arabs and the conquering Normans. One past travel advertisement for Sicily said:"Come to Sicily... everyone else did!" As we overview the island's history, we will examine its art and architecture from the Greek temples and theaters of Syracuse and Agrigento, to Villa Romana del Casale with its 40 magnificent rooms of intricate floor mosaics. We will also look at two key 12th century Norman structures: Palermo's Palatine Chapel and the newly restored Monreale Cathedral, which fuse the Arab and Norman cultures, and are adorned with acres of spectacular glittering golden mosaics.
