Two authors in the new essay collection What We Know, What We Wish: Maine Statehood, Historical Commemoration, and the Urgency of Public History (UMass Press, 2025) will offer brief illustrated talks about two moments in Maine history related to statehood as the starting point for a discussion with the audience about the value of history in the current day. Liam Riordan will focus on the early statehood era and its enduring legacies, and Micah Pawling will discuss the significance of the Wabanaki encampment in Portland during the Maine Centennial in 1920.The presenters are both professors at the University of Maine: Micah in History and Native American Studies, Liam is chair of the History Department.
