About: The is a national organization based in Richmond, Virginia, dedicated to developing solutions that seek to address the enduring impact of racial slavery on our shared American experience. Our 10,000-square-foot exhibition, Expanding Freedom, invites visitors to explore the evolution of American racial slavery. At the end of the exhibition, visitors have the opportunity to extend their learning journey in our Lab by utilizing multimedia and interactive tools and to participate in interdisciplinary and solutions focused programs and activities. At its core, the Shockoe Institute is a forward-looking organization that blends history, the arts, and education in an effort to inspire visitors to Learn, Reflect, and Act in ways that strengthen our civic life. We are excited to invite you to see our space prior to its public opening in April of 2026.
