Parking: We invite you to park in Lot B, across the street from the Station, as indicated by the gold star below. We have made arrangements with Main Street Station management to ensure this lot will not be ticketed.

Logistics: Please meet us in the lobby of the main entrance to the Station, as indicated by the red arrow on the graphic above.
Program: The afternoon will begin with a welcome, framing remarks and context setting from Shockoe Institute CEO Marland Buckner. Guests will then take a “hard hat” tour while hearing from the Institute’s Chief Operations Officer, Todd Waldo, and Senior Consulting Historian, Dr. Gregg Kimball, who will join Marland in this behind-the-scenes preview of the Institute’s permanent exhibit Expanding Freedom exhibit and Lab. Finally, participants will have the opportunity to engage the Institute team in discussion and to learn more about the Shockoe Institute’s future plans and goals.
About: The is a national organization based in Richmond, Virginia, dedicated to developing solutions that seek to address the enduring impact of racial slavery on our shared American experience. Our 10,000-square-foot exhibition, Expanding Freedom, invites visitors to explore the evolution of American racial slavery. At the end of the exhibition, visitors have the opportunity to extend their learning journey in our Lab by utilizing multimedia and interactive tools and to participate in interdisciplinary and solutions focused programs and activities. At its core, the Shockoe Institute is a forward-looking organization that blends history, the arts, and education in an effort to inspire visitors to Learn, Reflect, and Act in ways that strengthen our civic life. We are excited to invite you to see our space prior to its public opening in April of 2026.
