This trip will be completely in english. The Panch Kedar trek takes us to five remote Shiva temples in the Himalayas, which are deeply rooted in the mythology of the Mahabharata. According to tradition, Shiva hid in these places from the Pandava brothers who were seeking salvation from their sins. Each temple represents a different manifestation of Shiva:
Kalpeshwar (2.200 m) – Shivas Dreadlocks
Rudranath (3.559 m) – Shivas Face
Tungnath (3.680 m) – Shivas Arms
Madhyamaheshwar (3.490 m) – Shivas navel
Kedarnath (3.583 m) – Shivas Back
Each of these places can only be reached on foot and is situated at high altitude, which makes the hike a particular challenge.
Kedarnath is the most famous of the Panch Kedar temples and is considered one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas, which are particularly revered. The temple is picturesquely situated in a high valley, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, some of which are over 7,000 meters high. From Rishikesh, we drive around 200 kilometers before having to cover the last 16 kilometers on foot. Behind the temple is also the Samadhi (tomb) of the famous philosopher Adi Shankaracharya, who founded Advaita Vedanta.
This hiking tour not only offers fascinating landscapes and spiritual insights, but also an intensive encounter with the mythology and tradition of the Himalayas. It is a journey off the beaten track that requires patience, perseverance and a willingness to embrace the power of these ancient places.
