(English below)Im 17. Jahrhundert konvertierte eine Gruppe von Juden freiwillig zum Islam, um ihrem Anführer und selbsternannten Messias, Shabbetai Zvi, zu folgen. Sie entwickelten eine Art mystische, antinomistische Religion, die Elemente der jüdischen Kabbala und des Sufi-Islam verband. Sie wurden auch Selaniki („Menschen aus Saloniki“) genannt. Sich selbst nannten sie Meaminim, Gläubige. Im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert wurden sie zu einer treibenden Kraft bei der kulturellen und wirtschaftlichen Modernisierung von Saloniki.

Shiur: The Doenmeh - between Sabbatian Kabbalah and progressive liberalism
In the 17th century, a group of Jews voluntarily converted to Islam to follow their leader and self-proclaimed messiah, Shabbetai Zvi. They developed a kind of mystical, antinomian religion that combined elements of Jewish Kabbalah and Sufi Islam. They were also called Selaniki (“people from Salonika”). They called themselves Meaminim, believers. In the 19th and 20th centuries, they became a driving force in the cultural and economic modernization of Salonika.
In our shiur with Klaus Idel this Shabbat, we want to take a closer look at the “Doenmeh” and explore the question of whether they were really a conversion or the invention of something new.
