About this Event
Shining a light on...the magnificence of the Chapter House
Tuesday 10th March 2026, 2.30-3:45pm
in the State Chamber, Southwell Minster
Voted the nation’s favourite Cathedral treasure in 2023 for good reason, this talk will highlight some of the incredible naturalistic carvings that were fashioned with such attention to detail over 800 years ago. In addition to the incredible ‘Leaves of Southwell’ which so inspired Pevsner, we will explore what the stone carvings can tell us about socio-economic, cultural and natural history in England at the time the Chapter House was constructed (1290-1310). Hopefully this brief introduction will inspire all attendees to visit this special place to just ‘stand and stare’.
Speaker: Janet Stocks
Janet has been a Steward and Guide at the Minster for the past 11 years since retiring from Great Ormond St Hospital's Institute of Child Health, where she led an international research team. After moving to Nottinghamshire, she was captivated by the beauty and tranquillity of Southwell Minster and developed a particular passion for the exquisite carvings within the Chapter House.
