About this Event
Join Common Good City Farm to learn how to make dyes using plants and take home a plant-dyed fabric!
We will have 4 colors available:
- Yellow: onions, flower heads, yarrow
- Green: yarrow, stinging nettle
- Pink/ red: avocado pits, madder root
- Purple: blackberries, elderberries, or pokeberries
We will demonstrate:
- how to make different color dyes using fruits and vegetables
- how to dye different types of fabrics: cotton hand towels, handkerchiefs, silk scarves
- how to dye fabrics using the Shibori technique*
Each participant will get to dye and take home 1 cotton hand towel. You can also add on a silk scarf or handkerchief to dye as well.
*Shibori is a form of dyeing textiles that involves what is called "stitch-resist" where parts of the fabric are bound, knotted, or clamped together in order to form patterns during the dyeing process. In English we sometimes know this as tie-dye, even though that term doesn't capture the breadth of techniques that exist. While many different cultures have used stitch- or shaped-resist methods to dye, the contributions made by the Japanese are so well-known worldwide, the Japanese word "shibori" has been adopted to describe this type of dyeing. You can learn more about shibori, including specific techniques and their histories, from the World Shibori Institute.
