About the Speaker
Speaker, author, and vulnerable populations advocate, Sherri Lukes, has been a dental hygienist for 44 years, holding advanced degrees in education.
She is associate professor Emerita, Southern Illinois University, where she taught general and oral pathology, public health, and multicultural dental hygiene. Her research focus was oral pathology and migrant farmworker oral health, resulting in multiple peer reviewed publications.
Sherri enjoys integrating her years of experience into continuing education courses and publications to empower dental professionals in the process of care. She serves as a professional educator and key opinion leader for multiple corporate entities. She is an approved speaker of and holds a pathology fellowship in the American Academy of Dental Hygiene and is a past president of the Illinois Dental Hygienists’ Association.
Community service includes current President of the Board of Directors, Rural Health, Inc., Volunteer Presenter, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention-IL, and twenty four years of annual trips to southern Mexico, delivering preventive care in an orphanage and remote villages.
Honors include Community Service, Research, and Teacher of the Year awards at SIU, Illinois Department of Public Health Oral Health Champion, the Sunstar/RDH Award of Distinction, Western Society of Periodontology Dental Hygiene speaker of the year, and ADHA Award for Excellence in Dental Hygiene.

Part One: What Are We REALLY Looking For? – Oral Pathology Cases and Concepts

Course Introduction
This course is an overview of oral pathologic conditions from Ms. Lukes’ own personal collection of lesion images accumulated over 44 years as a dental hygienist, a 28-year teaching career and 20 years of mission work. Etiology, clinical appearance and treatment options are included for each lesion/condition, highlighting the assessment phase of the process of care. The course includes both common and uncommon conditions, many of which are signs of systemic disease, emphasized in a discussion about interdisciplinary collaboration with other health professionals. Comparison images for inclusion in differential diagnoses will also be presented encouraging dental professionals to utilize all patient information when analyzing lesions. This course can serve as an excellent update for seasoned hygienists/dentists or a relevant review for new graduates entering the field.
Instructional Objectives
Upon completion of the session, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss the importance of current oral pathology knowledge when conducting intra/extra-oral exams.
2. Explain the etiology, clinical appearance and treatment options of various oral pathologic conditions.
3. Compare/contrast lesions that can be considered in a differential diagnosis for each pathologic entity.
4. Describe oral symptoms of various systemic conditions as presented in cases.
5. Discuss interdisciplinary collaboration for follow up care for patients presenting with oral signs of systemic disease.

Part Two: Down and Out or Down and About? Raising Awareness of Mental Health Issues in Dentistry

Course Introduction
A plethora of mental health issues plague our society today and the dental community is not immune. Dental professionals encounter multiple stressors in the workplace which may result in significant anxiety, depression, and other emotional outcomes. A large proportion of our patients also suffer with mental health issues which in turn affect their oral health. Evidence concerning mental health issues nationwide and how patients and dental professionals are affected will be presented in this course, along with signs and symptoms of the most common conditions of anxiety and depression. Management and treatment strategies will be discussed, including evidence concerning suicide and approaches for suicide prevention. The knowledge obtained in the session can be utilized in personal as well as patient care for achieving whole body health in ourselves and our patients.
