About Shelby Smoak Duo:
After the publication of his award-winning memoir Bleeder (Michigan State UP, 2013), Shelby Smoak explored that book’s themes—HIV, hemophilia, love, death—in his music. From 2105-2021, he led the indie-rock band Bleeder whose music was fueled by shoegaze and fuzz-inspired indie-rock.
These releases mark Smoak’s shift to a solo artist where he writes, performs, records, and mixes his own music. Tapping into the dark textures of post-punk groups like Joy Division and The Cure, Smoak’s solo work highlights the isolation and continued struggle of his conditions. He splits time writing and recording in the Shenandoah mountains of VA and the coastal climes of NC.
