Join SheJumps and Alpenglow Expeditions for a Women’s AIARE 1 Hybrid Course in North Lake Tahoe — a comprehensive, entry-level avalanche education course designed for women and led by women.
This innovative hybrid format combines self-paced online learning with two full days of in-person field instruction in the Tahoe backcountry. Designed and taught by Alpenglow’s female staff of AMGA-trained ski and splitboard guides, the course introduces participants to the fundamentals of avalanche awareness, terrain recognition, and safe travel practices in a supportive, women-centered learning environment.
If you have completed the Backcountry 1.0 course or have at least 5–10 days of backcountry touring experience, this course is your next step toward confident, informed decision-making in avalanche terrain.
COURSE OVERVIEW:
Participants will spend approximately 8 hours completing online coursework before joining two immersive field days in North Lake Tahoe. This format maximizes time in the field while maintaining the same high-quality instruction Alpenglow Expeditions is known for.
TOPICS COVERED:
- Understanding the avalanche phenomenon
- Identifying and assessing avalanche terrain
- Weather and snowpack observation techniques
- Reading and interpreting avalanche forecasts
- Route planning and terrain management
- Human factors and group decision-making
- Companion rescue skills and use of safety equipment
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE:
This course welcomes women and non-binary participants who find value in a women-centered learning environment. Skiers and riders must be advanced-intermediate and confident on blue and most black-diamond runs (including ungroomed terrain).
Ages 16+ welcome; ages 12–15 may join with a parent or guardian.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Expect two active, full days in the field, hiking and skiing in winter mountain conditions. Participants should be prepared for variable weather and moderate physical exertion. Guides will focus on developing both technical knowledge and practical skills through hands-on learning and small-group instruction.
DIGITAL LEARNING:
Participants will complete 5–8 hours of self-paced online coursework before the in-person sessions. This digital module includes videos, quizzes, and interactive lessons designed to strengthen understanding before heading into the field.
RENTALS:
Touring skis/splitboards, boots, avalanche safety kits (beacon, shovel, probe), and packs are available for rent from Alpenglow Expeditions.
