About this Event
WOMEN AND MEN, COMPLETE BEGINNERS WELCOME - OVER 18'S PLEASE
When I ask woodworking students what they would most like to be able to make the most popular answer by far is a shed. So here is a whole weekend course aiming to let everyone get a feel for all the different skills involved. Making a simple shed is a project that is well within your capabilities if you get these skills together, have a detailed plan and procedure sorted, and take your time :-) .... and you don't need tons of expensive equipment...
WHAT WE'RE GOING TO COVER
We'll start with a look around at some of the many sheds and shelters on the farm, from the original shed made from pallets to the most recent open canopy on larch trunks - you'll see that there's a lot of different ways to do things. Then we'll go into as many of the skills and processes as we can:
SAFETY FIRST
A SIMPLE DESIGN - it's a box! With a pitched roof, walls, a floor, a door and a window. Working from a drawing or designing your own.
MATERIALS - getting good materials, what you can recycle and what's more bother than it's worth. Where a little extra cost sometimes gives you a much better job. Timber specifications, different wooden sheet materials and roofing materials.
BASE - simplest way to make base - slabs on ground - getting them level
FLOOR - joists on slabs protected by damp-proof - OS board floor
WALLS - making frame and cladding - fitting T&G weather board
DOOR and WINDOW - making openings for reclaimed window and door
ROOF - making trusses and purlins - OS board for roof, felt covering - ladders, BE CAREFUL!
INSULATION - What's it going to be used for? If it's just for storing garden stuff you won't need insulation but if it's going to be an office or other work space you will.
PERTH COMMUNITY FARM
This is an excellent venue for this course as we have a variety of teaching spaces we can use depending on the weather and we're very close to the centre of Perth. Directions to the farm etc will go out by email nearer the time.
