Who is SHE?She is…inspiring…daring…creative…resilient, but her essence cannot be captured through words alone. SHE must be seen and SHE must be heard.
The Wilmington Symphonic Winds invites you to experience the second performance of our 10th Season! SHE celebrates the contributions of women in music. We are so excited to welcome international percussion soloist and educator She-e Wu to Wilmington for this program of works by women composers. This concert will be one to remember!
SHE will be anchored by a performance of the Percussion Concerto by GRAMMY and Pulitzer Prize winning composer Jennifer Higdon. She-e Wu will dazzle you with her artistry on nearly 20 different instruments!
The concert also includes two pieces originally written for choir and later transcribed for band. These include Indian-American composer Reena Esmail’s own reworking of her Tuttarana and “Vichnaya Pamyat” by Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir from the soundtrack to the HBO miniseries Chernobyl.
Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, No. 1 will open the concert. Our performance will conclude with a pair of pieces that will most certainly lift your spirits. ROMA by Valerie Coleman is a tribute to the Romani culture as told through the eyes and hearts of Romani women everywhere. Early Light by Carolyn Bremer combines her love of baseball with an optimistic homage to our national anthem in her Early Light. Don’t miss this opportunity to celebrate the power of women!
Admission to this concert is FREE! We will happily accept donations to support future programming. Tickets may be obtained 1) in advance through the Kenan website using the QR code or 2) on the day of the event from a volunteer handing out the remaining tickets at Kenan Auditorium, 515 Wagoner Drive in Wilmington, beginning at 3:30 pm.
