Dec. 8: Suburbia (1983) Penelope Spheeris
Spheeris was not finished examining 1980s LA punk culture after her groundbreaking documentary investigation of the same in The Decline of Western Civilization (1981). Themes arise in the documentary that become plot devices in this fascinating film that follows a group of disaffected and disconnected young punks (The Rejected of “TR”) who are squatting in an abandoned housing development. It is, in fact, primarily this theme of abandonment that the film is concerned with. Part of a wave of films in the 1980s exploring the wasteland of suburban housing developments and kids left to their own devices by working parents, Spheeris’s is unique in its nearly adult-free rendering. Plus, the film’s soundtrack would become a generational touchstone. Come see and HEAR it at The Camelot!!!
Evan Johnson: “They call it Suburbia and that word's perfect because it's the combination of the word suburb and Utopia.”
Jack Diddley: “They didn't realize they'd be the slums of the future.”
