About this Event

Whether you want to consider a portfolio career in the future or add a non-executive director (NED) role alongside your current role, this one-day course is designed to get you ready for your path to the boardroom.


Practically focused, the course will provide female professionals with a comprehensive look at the process of becoming a NED; the duties and responsibilities of NEDs; legal requirements and information on board structure and governance; a workshop on CV preparation including identifying and communicating core competences and relevant experience as well as skills and behaviours of an effective NED.


To help you understand how to identify your first opportunities, the course also includes a panel discussion with accomplished industry NEDs offering insights and advice followed by a chance to have networking drinks with them.

Female professionals from the European built environment industry who want to take the first step towards becoming a non-executive director as well as existing NEDs looking to approach the process more systematically, work on how to present themselves and their experience and get more insight into all aspects of becoming a successful NED.

Elisabeth is an external member of the Bank of England’s Financial Policy Committee (FPC) and an external member of the Bank of England’s FMI (Financial Market Infrastructure) Board.


She was a member of the Supervisory Board of Aareal Bank AG, the deputy chair of the Risk Committee and a member of the Technology and Innovation Committee from 2015 - 2022. She has been the Chair of Edinburgh Investment Trust (EIT) plc, a FTSE 250 listed investment trust, since July 2022, having been a non-executive director of EIT since 2019.


She has been an external member of the Audit and Risk Committee of AIIB (Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank) since April 2021 and a member of alstria AG’s Supervisory Board since May 2021.


Previously, Elisabeth was a Senior Advisor to the Bank of England’s Prudential Regulation Authority (2015-18). In this role she focused on governance across the UK’s financial services sector.


She was a non-executive director of the Board of Korian SA (2017-19), the listed, largest provider of retirement and nursing homes in France and Germany and a member of the Supervisory Board and Audit Committee of TLG Immobilien AG (2014-18), a publicly listed Commercial Real Estate company based in Berlin.


Elisabeth was Global Chief Operating Officer for LaSalle Investment Management (2013-14), having previously worked at Morgan Stanley for over 20 years (1988-2012).


Elisabeth is a member of Council of the London School of Economics (LSE) and of the LSE’s Finance and Estates Committee.

Experienced Chair with extensive experience of working with boards in Europe, Asia and North America. Currently Chair of board consultancy Boardelta, the charities The EY Foundation and ESSA- Education Sub Saharan Africa as well as Chair of the Oversight Board for the Chartered Management Consultant and trustee of the Chartered Management Institute.



Executive experience with Air Products and FTSE 100 3i Group plc where he was Communications Director, a member of its Operating committee and Chair of its Operational Risk forum.



He has also helped Chairs across a wide range of sectors to transform the effectiveness of their boards through Boardelta and is the author of the award winning “Boards” and three other successful books on the subject.


Patrick was member of the Higgs Review and has helped to establish many successful courses on board skills over the last twenty years including for the BVCA, Invest Europe and the Financial Times as well as for numerous Social sector organisations.


He has a passion for education and was a member of the General Council of the University of Warwick from 2006 to 2015. He is a Visiting Professor at Cranfield School of Management, and an Associate Fellow at Warwick Business School.


Patrick also has extensive experience of developing social enterprises, most notably with Leap Confronting Conflict where he is Patron and was Chairman, from 2006 to 2015, with ESSA- Education Sub-Saharan Africa which he founded in 2016, the EY Foundation and with Warwick in Africa which he founded in 2006. Warwick in Africa has now benefitted over 750,000 young Africans with transformed Maths and English teaching.

Mark advises firms on strategy, corporate positioning and internal communications. He also leads Madano’s coaching and training business, designing programmes to help companies manage complex change, improve engagement and productivity, and strengthen communications.


Clients come from financial and professional services, pharmaceuticals, property and construction, and energy and the environment.


Before joining Madano in 2011, Mark was a Head of Communications for four banks, worked for the Hong Kong Trade Development Council during the handover and was a journalist and newsreader for 12 years.


Mark has an MBA from Henley Management College and is a Governor of a north London school.

Alex Tamlyn has over 30 years of experience advising clients on corporate finance, UK and international securities offerings, Class 1 acquisitions and disposals, schemes of arrangement, corporate governance and securities regulation, directors' duties and shareholder disputes.


Alex is Head of DLA Piper's EMEA Capital Markets practice, and is Co-Chair of the firm's Boardroom Advisory Services practice which launched in February 2019 and which is designed to support the lifecycle of boardroom needs. It promotes the quality and resilience of board decisions, helps manage risk, enhances reputation and drives value creation within a legal and regulatory context.


In July 2018, Alex became a non-executive director of London main market listed British & American Investment Trust plc. Moreover, he serves as Chair of the Primary Markets Group of the London Stock Exchange – a body of senior representatives of issuers, investment banks, investors, law firms and accountants and the LSE who regularly meet to explore issues affecting the LSE's Primary Markets. This provides DLA Piper with a unique insight into current and impending capital markets rules, regulations and policy.

Andrea Carpenter is Co-Founder and Director of Diversity Talks Real Estate, and a writer and communications consultant in the property industry.


As a Director of Diversity Talks Real Estate, Andrea helps raise the visibility of under-represented groups in the industry through the stage and media. This includes training and other female-led initiatives through DTRE’s Women Talk Real Estate community.


On the writing side, her book about the history of the modern European property industry, High Rise and Fall, was published by Routledge in September 2018.


Andrea began her career as a journalist at Property Week before moving on to be editor of EuroProperty for seven years. Following this she worked for various industry bodies including the Urban Land Institute, INREV in Amsterdam, and its sister organisation ANREV in Hong Kong. On returning to the UK, she worked as Head of Marketing and Communications EMEA at CBRE Global Investors.
