Shangri-La Returns with M.G. Boulter, Plantman & Tumbledryer Babies! Thanks to Raz and Patrick for taking us in from the cold and welcoming us to our new spiritual home at The Betsey Trotwood.
For those of you who have been living under a rock or outside of Southend for the past 15 years, SHANGRI-LA was an intimate, laid back weekly shindig in the best room in the best pub in Southend. Hosted by Lance and Tom of popular beat combo Cusack/The Sad Sons but now in the best room in the best pub in London.
Singer songwriters, alt country, folk, psyche, garage, whatever takes our fancy really. Never shit...or rarely. Best of the local pool of talent plus the finest acts from around the country.
We're delighted to bring you:
TUMBLEDRYER BABIES
In 2019, with 30-something (he did say recently but we weren't really paying attention) albums, a completely sold out best of LP and support slots with The Lovely Eggs and Calvin Johnson, Southend-on-sea’s pithiest one man pop group decided to hang up his omnichord and retired from playing live... Until now...
We are naturally pretty chuffed to be hosting Andrew’s first gig back. Quite simply, if you don’t love Tumbledryer Babies, you don’t have a soul and need to seek immediate professional help.

PLANTMAN
Effortlessly beautiful melodies that echo the melancholy of the Go-Betweens, mixed with touches of Sebadoh and Yo La Tengo thrown in for good measure. Just like he did in Beatglider, The Hillmisters and Ghost Music, Matt Randall brings us more delicate arrangements, uncomplicated yet powerful songwriting and effortlessly emotive vocals. Like the gentler sounds of The Velvet Underground, pop at its most beautiful and melancholic.

M.G. BOULTER
You all know him, right? You should. Vignettes of ordinary life set to beautiful guitars. With albums topping best of the year lists all over the place and R2 Magazine calling him “a weapon’s grade songwriter”, we're thrilled to have Matt back at Shangri-La again, a million years ago, he was here every week - Often hyped up on Cranberry Juice and Fish Fingers. Seriously though for those who actually don't know - Expect some killer guitar playing and gorgeous singing. I'm done being nice about him now though.
