It's a big year for LAMDA, having just announced an American presence and a very special patron actor in Brian Cox. But
Rodney Cottier is one of the primary reason the the world’s oldest drama conservatory is such a success. (Not one of the reasons it's the oldest!) It is true that as the Associate Director at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Rodney has only 36 years experience as a director and teacher of stage combat, acting and text at LAMDA, he has directed over 25 plays from Shakespeare’s canon. Southwest Shakes is delighted to welcome him back to the Mesa Arts Center.
Rodney has also worked at Shakespeare’s Globe as Master-of-Fight, choreographing several productions including Mark Rylance’s Hamlet.
Rodney Cottier’s Shakespeare Masterclass is interactive, stimulating, and barrels of fun! He takes students through a lively history of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre; explores questions of Elizabethan staging in contemporary performance; delves into Shakespeare’s First Folio; and uses these discussions to approach Shakespeare’s text by working select scenes from the complete plays, with special attention to either King Lear or Henry VI Part 3.
The class is free-of-charge, runs 2.5 - 3 hours, and is geared to all levels of experience. All are welcome, and the more who attend, the merrier. No special preparation is required, but if possible, participants should have a copy of Shakespeare’s complete works (any edition).
