About this Event
Shake Baby Shake is the explosive retrospective stage show celebrating the golden age of rock & roll.
Performing the hits of the major artists of the 1950s and ’60s, pumpin’ piano entertainer Lance Lipinsky—of the Tony Award–winning Million Dollar Quartet musical—and his Chicago-based show band The Lovers bring the music to life in a dynamic, interactive concert atmosphere. The audience is encouraged to dance, sing along, and even request songs as the story behind the music unfolds.
Combining concert, comedy, and a bit of history, fans of the mid-century’s “atomic age” will relive the roots that pioneered the birth of rock & roll from 1955–1965—featuring rhythm & blues, country & western, rockabilly, doo-wop, surf, and soul. Expect classics from Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers, Ricky Nelson, Bo Diddley, Bill Haley & the Comets, the Ventures, and more.
While Johnny was still in high school, he tried starting his own band—but finding kids his age with the same taste in music proved impossible. With his father’s help (and a fake ID), he began sneaking into Chicago honky-tonks—not to drink, but to learn.
Johnny’s father was close friends with Chicago honky-tonk legend Jimmy Nichols, whom he had helped get his start back in the late ’50s. When it came time to return the favor, Nichols took Johnny under his wing. At just 15, Johnny began playing lead guitar for Nichols, entirely self-taught and fluent in all styles. He made his debut at the Off Broadway Lounge, quickly becoming a big draw—known as the kid with horn-rimmed glasses and lightning-fast guitar licks.
Johnny continued playing with Nichols until age 21, when it was finally time to form his own band—and his own show.
