FAQs

Are there minimum age requirements to enter the event?

19 years old by the last day of the class (2 years past the LGIT minimum age).

Passing 3 Swim Tests as per Red Cross requirements at the beginning of class.

  • Swim 300 yards (example: 12 lengths of a standard 25-yard public pool) demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing without stopping, not timed. Use freestyle 100 yards, breaststroke 100 yards, and either free or breast last 100 yards.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
  • A timed weight-retrieval drill (the Brick) where you swim 20 yards, do a surface dive to a 10-pound weight in 7-10 feet deep water, surface and swim on your back with the object 20 yards, exit the water without using a ladder or steps. The time limit is 1 minute and 40 seconds. This is an easy time interval for the normal swimmer.
  • Please note: Course tuition fees are not refundable for not passing the swim pre-tests. Although the tests are not exceedingly difficult, being a lifeguard takes solid swimming skills or you could put yourself and/or the victim in serious danger and have a double drowning. The Red Cross and your instructors take that seriously. Why not practice test yourself in the days or weeks before class?

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

HappySwimmers.com website, ask for owner Jenn

What's the refund policy?

100% refund or transfer to another class up to 7 days before first class start date.

Documented medical excuses (doctor's note) excepted.

Once class starts, no refunds.  To be clear: Paying for a class does not guarantee a passing grade. You must meet the standards of the Red Cross to get their certificate.  YOU need to take the responsibility to do the work, use the study guide we give, and be a competent swimmer so you, your classmates here, and your victim don't drown.  We turn out great lifeguard instructors, but ones who've put the effort in and are competent.
