About this Event
The SFST Instructor Development Course is a comprehensive instructor course. This five-day course is designed to impart the student-instructor with the knowledge and skills for instructing the SFST Course.
The COURSE DOES NOT SOLELY FOCUS ON TEACHING SFSTs.
The ILEA Instructor Development Course is not a prerequisite for this training.
The course concentrates on effective general teaching skills then incorporates the SFST curriculum. The 40 hours of classroom training include, but are not limited to, the following subjects:
- ​Concepts of Adult Learning and Teaching Techniques
- Basic Public Speaking
- Effective Classroom Presentations
- Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Curriculum
- Drugs That Impair Driving Curriculum
- Managing a Live Alcohol Workshop
- Student Instructor Presentations of SFST Curriculum Sessions

Monday hours are 1:00 pm to 10:00 pm to accommodate Live Alcohol Workshop with Proficiency Exam. Remaining training dates (Tuesday through Friday) from 8:30 to 5:30 pm. Registering will enroll you for the full five-day course.
Qualifications
Students should be officers who are specifically assigned to combating the impaired driver. Students are required to have previous training in SFSTs consistent with NHTSA standards. Additionally, students should possess a high level of proficiency and an active interest in instructing other officers in becoming proficient in the application of SFSTs. Students must have completed the Basic Standardized Field Sobriety Course prior to be able to attend the instructor course. A proficiency performance exam will be administered on the first day of the course.

SFST Instructor Development training is provided by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI). There is no cost for the course registration, manuals, class materials or equipment. Lodging and per diem are provided by ICJI based on State Travel Guidelines. Lodging is available for those traveling more than 50 miles before or between days of the course. ICJI handles all lodging reservations, arrangements and payment.

Following completion of training each student is required to submit a paystub for documentation purposes. ***
