Agenda
Back to Basics/Aquatics 101

Info: This session provides an in-depth review of the fundamental principles of aquatic plant management, designed for both new and experienced professionals. Participants will gain a working understanding of how to assess aquatic systems, develop treatment prescriptions, and properly implement management plans. The presentation will emphasize the “anatomy of a label,” including how to interpret product information, restrictions, and application parameters for compliance and effective results.
Attendees will also review key aquatic math concepts used to calculate treatment rates, concentrations, and application volumes. Through real-world examples and interactive discussion, the session will demonstrate how to effectively communicate treatment objectives, results, and regulatory considerations with customers, stakeholders, and the public.

Innovation or Stagnation: Modernizing an aging industry.

Info: Aquatic plant management in Florida has remained relatively unchanged after 126 years of efforts. Early control endeavors included mechanical operations to physically remove or destroy aquatic vegetation. The advent of chemical herbicides offered a paradigm shift allowing aquatic W**d infestations to suddenly be tackled with great effectiveness. However, environmental degradation due to herbicide use has been a primary concern of stakeholders and a key challenge for aquatic W**d programs. So much so, in fact, that a return to the original mechanical control methods is being pushed harder than ever. In such a stigmatized industry and with so few tools at our disposal, it is critical to remain innovative and aware of public perceptions. The ability educate stakeholders, to think outside the box, upgrade equipment, increase work efficiency, reduce herbicide use, and utilize modern technologies to enhance aquatic plant control efforts is paramount for the everyday applicator in 2025.

Overview of Invasive Plant Terminology and Identification in Natural Areas

Info: This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of invasive plant management in natural areas, beginning with key terminology. This will be followed by a detailed review of invasive plant identification in upland areas, including for species like melaleuca, Brazilian peppertree, Australian pine, coral ardisia, shoebutton ardisia, Hawaiian half-flower, carrotwood, Chinese tallow tree, tropical soda apple, downy rose myrtle, and more. A second component will involve a live questionnaire with side-by-side photos for attendees to test their knowledge, identification skills, and ability to differentiate between the invasive species discussed and their common native look-a-like species that are often encountered in South Florida natural environments.

Field Safety

Info: As properly trained and educated applicators we should be aware of the need for a healthy respect for the conditions we work in and products we use on a regular basis. Familiarity in any job can lead to lowering of alertness and increased chance for accidents. In the field of vegetation management, such accidents have far reaching consequences. This presentation will discuss maintaining awareness and attention to safety while on the job. It will cover topics such as herbicide safety, PPE, maintaining safe equipment, as well as personal applicator safety while working under harsh environmental conditions.
