Sewing Drop In (yes, we'll teach you to sew) - November

Join us for a sewing drop-in.
We meet once per month in person.
Bring your machine and current project to work on or supplies to work on a seasonal group project (see below for this month's project). Feel free to come for the whole time or part of the time. The meeting is free.
There are steps and a ramp available to get into the venue.
Special thanks to Harmon Park for allowing us to use the clubhouse. Contact them at 205/470-7722 for information about clubhouse rentals for birthdays, weddings, and other events. It's a lovely venue.
Please join our sewing drop in group to stay up to date about meetings or just talk sewing. https://www.facebook.com/groups/2851046561771477
Sewing Lessons:
We'll have a couple of machines available to teach beginners the basics of sewing if you don't have your own machine yet. If you want to learn to sew and have your own machine, please bring it with needle and bobbin for that machine (and the owner's manual/booklet if available).
Fabric swap:
Bring clean, usable scraps and/or fabric yardage you'd like to swap (not sell). It's a great way to find new fabrics for small projects and for quilting. We had two large round tables full of fabric to trade last meeting. That's right, free fabric.
Seasonal group project: Cross-back apron. Just in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas cooking or holiday gifting.
I'll have a few finished examples in different sizes to try on if you are unsure what size to cut at the meeting.
Supplies for cross-back apron:
Scissors, thread, sewing machine. I'll bring a basic iron and board/matt, but there's plenty of room if you'd like to bring your own iron/board. I'll also have patterns ready. I'm modifying a pattern slightly for larger sizes and simpler sewing, so I'll have kraft paper on hand for you to trace to take a pattern home.
I strongly recommend a non-directional fabric for your first apron. That is, a fabric with a pattern that doesn't have one right side up. Yardage varies by apron size. PLEASE feel free to ask questions if anything on this doesn't make sense. Basically, the larger size you have to turn sideways on the fabric.
I recommend duck cloth or lightweight cotton twill for the outer fabric and regular woven cotton (sometimes called quilting cotton) for the lining. You can use regular cotton for both layers for a lighter-weight apron. The example photo (not ironed, wrinkles come right out) is duck cloth with regular woven cotton lining.

Hips 42"/Bust 41" and under
If using a directional fabric, the top of the apron will be aligned with the 36" cut of the fabric.
1 yard of duck cloth or lightweight twill
1 yard of cotton backing fabric
Hips over 42"/Bust over 41"
If using a directional fabric, the top of the apron will be aligned with the 42" width of the fabric.
1.5 yards (up to 52" hips) or 2 yards (up to 72" hips) of duck cloth or lightweight twill
1.5 yards (up to 52" hips) or 2 yards (up to 72" hips) of cotton backing fabric
