About this Event
Arriving Saturday October 12th from Vicam Pueblo, Sonora: Sewa Tomteme (Blooming Flower) cultural school!
Join us at Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center, 2pm for the opening exhibition of Ricardo Favela, RCAF artist of Yaqui descent. Sewa Tomteme students will have an opportunity to speak on the preservation of Yaqui arts through dance.
Afterwards, we will head to the Centro Cultural de La Raza for an evening of games and youth activities (5 p.m.). This Eventbrite is to give us an idea of how much food to make for the Centro community gathering with the youth on October 12th. It is not necessary to register for all of the activities; just show up to meet our relatives from Vicam, Sonora, Mexico.
Finally, we will close our gathering Sunday morning at Chicano Park, 9am. Vicam Students will demonstrate traditional Yaqui dances, followed by a presentation of powwow dancing by Yaqui SoCal members of Soaring Eagles Pow Wow Dance Group. Opening blessing graciously offered by Kumeyaay singers Jamie LaBrake and Blue Eagle Vigil. Finally, Peace and Dignity Project leader Carlos Pelayo will introduce Chichimeca/Otomi singers and closing remarks.
Deepest gratitude to @tonatierra_org @chicanopark_museum the @centrocultural and @chicanopark_official for creating space for this encounter to take place and @kokoim.yaquis.betana for bringing their chiltepin products from Potam Pueblo
