About this Event

When: Thursday, October 23rd (2:30 – 5:00)

Where: Clackamas County Red Soils Campus

Development Services Building – Auditorium (Room 115)

(150 Beavercreek Rd, Oregon City, OR 97045)

Overview: Oregonians of all ages and backgrounds are experiencing a continued increase in mental and behavioral health challenges, which can have adverse impacts on their ability to participate in education and training programs, enter the workforce, maintain employment, and live stable, fulfilling lives.

It is critical that service providers within the local workforce system have the skills and information necessary to appropriately understand and assist individuals as they re-enter the workforce, engage in training/education programs, and/or maintain employment while managing or recovering from a behavioral health condition.

Please Note: This has evolved into a series of three stand-alone learning opportunities. The information below is specific to Session II on Thursday, October 23rd. Attendance at the previous event (or following event) is not required.

During Session II of the Behavioral Health and Workforce Services Symposium: Industry experts will lead conversations and activities to help service providers better understand how they can assist individuals with behavioral health needs as they navigate the world of work, including:

Reasonable Workplace Accommodations vs. Informal Workplace Modifications:

o What is a legal "reasonable accommodation" in the workplace

o What is an informal workplace modification

o What is the difference between an informal workplace modification and a reasonable accommodation

o When and how to ask for an informal modification versus a reasonable accommodation

Seeking Reasonable Workplace Accommodations and Informal Modifications:

o What are the legal obligations of employers in providing reasonable accommodations

o What are the legal rights of workers in need of a reasonable workplace accommodation

o What resources are available to workers seeking reasonable workplace accommodations and/or informal workplace modifications

Expectations of Employers for Accommodation/Modifications:

o What is the appropriate expectation of employers when seeking resources or supports for a formal or informal accommodation/modification

o What are the potential reactions employers might have to a request for an accomodation or informal modification

o How to best manage challenging responses to a request for accomodation or workplace modification

o What resources and formal recourse are available to employees who are denied a reasonable accommodation or workplace modification

Networking: Networking and relationship-building activities

About the event series: Due to the complex topics that may be addressed, this event will be one of trhee made available to service providers in the Clackamas County area. Each event will be a stand-alone session, so attendance at all three is not required - audience members will still benefit from participating in a single session, but are of course encouraged to join all three!

Who should attend: Anyone providing members of the public with support services or coaching related to education, training, or employment; and/or anyone providing services to the public that would benefit from better understanding the impacts of behavioral health experiences on individuals, especially within the workpalce or while seeking employment.

This event is supported by Clackamas Workforce Partnership, Northwest Family Services, Trillium Health, and Clackamas County.
