Born in Ashburton, Byron ‘Buzz’ Newton earned his nickname while working in the family honey business. Initially playing piano, he later took up the Baritone with the Ashburton Silver Brass Band and, after an accident involving a mouthpiece, was gifted a Euphonium by his teacher. Buzz moved to Christchurch where he joined the Woolston Brass Academy and was soon promoted to Woolston Brass. Buzz holds degrees from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand School of Music, and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where he achieved a perfect score in his Master's recital. His career spans roles with the Tredegar Town Band, Wellington Brass Band, the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band, and performances with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia, and New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Currently Principal Tuba with Orchestra Wellington, Buzz is also an Artist Teacher at the New Zealand School of Music and founded the Buzzing Brass Academy in 2016 to nurture young talent.
